Data

The value of Earth Observation lies not only in the satellites and sensors themselves but in the data services that transform raw measurements into usable information. Across Europe and the wider Atlantic region, an extensive ecosystem of open-access and operational EO platforms now provides seamless access to ocean, coastal, and atmospheric data - enabling researchers, policymakers, and industry to turn observations into actionable insights.

These services integrate satellite, in-situ, and modelled data through advanced analytics and cloud-based tools, supporting a wide range of maritime applications including renewable energy operations, fisheries management, pollution tracking, and climate adaptation.

Whether delivering real-time metocean forecasts, harmonised environmental indicators, or interactive digital twins, these data infrastructures represent the connective layer of the modern ocean information system - ensuring that EO data is discoverable, interoperable, and ready for innovation.

The following table lists key maritime EO data services and platforms supporting Atlantic and global ocean applications:

Name Description Focus Website
Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) Operational forecasts and reanalysis of ocean state variables Offshore energy, fisheries, coastal planning marine.copernicus.eu
EMODnet Aggregated in-situ and modelled marine data across Europe Ecosystem management, pollution tracking emodnet.eu
GEOSS Portal Global EO data integration portal, supported by ESA Transatlantic ocean monitoring, disaster response geoportal.org
AI on Demand Cloud-based analytics and ML toolkits for EO data Anomaly detection, marine risk prediction ai4europe.eu
DIAS Platforms (e.g., WEkEO, CREODIAS) nified access to Copernicus EO data and computing Custom analytics and EO integration dias-copernicus.eu

Blue-Cloud Gateway Federated marine research data and virtual labs Open science and ecosystem forecasting blue-cloud.org

As part of EO4MI, these data services provide the foundation for developing next-generation maritime applications. They support innovation pilots focused on enhanced metocean forecasting, ecosystem monitoring, and navigation safety - demonstrating how open EO data can be transformed into value-added services for the Atlantic blue economy.
